The construction of this mosque was to replace Surau Babul Jannah, a 174-year old mosque, in time to br replaced by time. The mosque was later named Masjid Al-Bukhary, taking on the name of the Founder of the Al-Bukhary Foundation. This foundation is owned by Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar Shah bin Syed Nor Al-Bukhary, a prominent Malay businessman in Malaysia. In 2008, he was crowned the Maal Hijrah Personage at the national level in conjunction with Maal Hijrah in 1429 Hijriyah.
The mosque was built on an acre site at Lot 192, Section 56, Mukim of Kuala Lumpur City. The British government has been gazetting the land as an Islamic burial ground in 1922 (G.N 784-23). The original was the old surau land and partly the Islamic cemetery that was administered by DYMM Sultan Selangor, who entrusted Allahyarham Syed Lal Shah Al-Bukhary to develop and maintain this surau named Babul Jannah.
Proposed construction of the mosque began in 2001 with the establishment of the Mosque Project Committee Member after obtaining the Federal Territory Mufti’s consent, to be administered and approved by the relevant government. The contruction took three years.
The cultural construction of the mosque began in September 2004 and was fully completed in September 2006 which took 24 months with the development cost of RM 12 million. The size of this mosque is 2,700 square metres with two Prayer Halls that can accommodate about 3,000 worshippers at one time.
The whole concept of this mosque’s architecture was characterized by the Islamic architecture. Its two towers were adapted from the features of the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah. In addition, there was also a main dome covered with special ceramic imported from Italy while the interior of the main dome was decorated with patterns adapted from the Middle East’s art. The elements on the outside of the mosque are a combination of Malay artistic features and Middle Eastern countries.
The mosque was been handed over to JAWI administration on 25th May 2007 (Friday). The first Friday prayer on that date was led by Al-Allaamah Al-Habib Umar bin Hafidz, the Principal of Darul Mustafa, Tarim, Hadramaut, Yemen. Meanwhile, Dato’ Che Mat bin Che Ali, Director of JAWI at that time was the khatib. The mosque was equipped with facilities such as a multipurpose hall, mosque management office, VIP lounge, bathroom, toilet, ablution place as well as store.
Surrounding this mosque was a charity donation of the Al-Bukhary Foundation to Muslims, especially the Muslims in the community area. The Al-Bukhary Foundation also assumes responsibility for all the maintenance costs and religious activities carried out at this mosque.
