Alor Setar, the capital of Kedah, is easily reached by road, air, or train, connected to other states in Malaysia through the North-South Expressway. For those driving from Thailand, Bukit Kayu Hitam is the entry point. Daily flights from Kuala Lumpur to Alor Setar are offered by Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia, and Malindo Air, with a one-hour flight duration. Langkawi is connected by air to Kuala Lumpur, Penang, and Singapore. The Senandung Langkawi Express train departs from Kuala Lumpur, stopping at major towns in Kedah, including Alor Setar, Sungai Petani, and Gurun.
Travellers heading to Langkawi can stop at Alor Setar and take a ferry to the island, with ferry points in Kuala Kedah and Kuala Perlis. Langkawi is also a stopover for the luxury liner, Star Cruises, and visitors from Thailand can sail into Langkawi from Satun.
