Masjid Al-Azhar, Kolej Universiti Islam Antarabangsa Selangor (KUIS), which is located in Bandar Seri Putera, has been categorized as “Institution Mosque” because of its location inside of an Islamic Institution of Higher Education. The institution, KUIS, is fully owned by Selangor Islamic Religious Council (MAIS) was established under the Private Higher Education Institution Act 1996. The mosque is referred as the heart of KUIS, because of its strategic location at the centre of KUIS.
The mosque was built during the first phase of construction, between the years 1998 to 2000. The mosque was officiated by His Royal Highness Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Ibni Almarhum Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah, the Sultan of Selangor on 25th May 2002. The mosque has received a lot of visits from international scholars such as Almarhum Dr Muhammad Saied Ramadhan Al-Bouti, Syeikh Muhammad Ali As-Soubuni, Mustafa Bugha and as well as local scholars. The mosque followed The Ottoman architecture whereby the style of the mosque is quite unique which has large domes, tall minarets and a spacy compound. The Ottoman-influenced mosques are also equipped with tall pillars, narrow stripes in between the saf prayers and high ceilings. These aforementioned characteristics can be seen within Masjid Al-Azhar in Egypt. In addition to the Ottoman style, the mosque is also influenced by Moorish and Arabic styles, as well as a little touch of modern Malay architecture.
The two-storey mosque can accommodate 3000 worshippers at one time. The main prayer hall is used by the males to perform their prayers. The mosque is active in conducting religious activities such as Maulidur Rasul, Quran recital and religious sermons after prayers. In addition, the mosque is also used for student’s campus activity such as nomination for campus election and weekly meetings.
