Description
Masjid Tengkera, also known as the Old Tengkera Mosque, is one of Melaka’s oldest and most historic mosques, built in 1728 during the Johor-Riau-Lingga Sultanate era. Located on Jalan Tengkera, it reflects the enduring Islamic influence among the Malay community despite foreign colonization. Architecturally, it uniquely blends Malay, Javanese, Chinese, and Indian styles, symbolizing cultural and religious harmony. The mosque is also the burial site of Sultan Hussin Shah, the last ruler of the Johor-Riau Sultanate. Over time, it has served as a place of worship, Islamic learning, and a social center. Today, it is recognized as a national heritage site and remains an important landmark and symbol of Melaka’s Islamic heritage.
