Description
Masjid Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia was built on a two-hectare site located at the main entrance of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. Its construction commenced on 16th March 1979 at a cost of RM 5.1 million. It was officially handed to Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) on Wednesday 14 April 1982. The first prayer in the mosque began on Friday 16 April 1982.
The design of the UKM Mosque was the brainchild of Mr. Abdullah Bakri, a former Director of Development Unit of the university. The mosque is surrounded by six small minarets and a large tower, with the height of 6,666 centimetres, which was inspired by Tun Syed Nasir, a former Pro-Chancellor of the university.
The mosque’s building consists of three levels. At the beginning of the establishment, the second level is used during prayers for male worshippers while the third level for female worshippers. The first level is used only for Friday prayers. The area of the mosque is equal to 25713.41 square metres (74,500) and can accommodate of 5,000 worshippers at one time. There are about 300 parking spaces for the convenience of visitors of the mosque.
